Marvin Sonsona scheduled to headline ESPN Friday Night Fight show against Orlando Cruz – Boxing News
Marvin Sonsona, the former WBO super flyweight champion, has been scheduled to take on Orlando Cruz, the current WBO Latino featherweight champion, in a 10-round non-title bout which will be televised live on Friday July 6, 2012.
The bout will headline ESPN’s weekly Friday night boxing show ‘Friday Night Fights’ and the pay-per-view is being organised and promoted by the duo of Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions and Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing LLC.
The special edition has been given the name ‘Hard Rock Boxing’ and will also witness Magomed Abdusalamov take on Maurice Byarm in a 10-round bout with the former’s WBC United States (USNBC) Silver heavyweight title on the line.
Marvin, 21, has been in a total 18 bouts and emerged victorious in 16. He has nailed 13 of his opponents by knockout and is considered as a decent knockout pugilist. The Filipino lad is a bit overshadowed by his Friday night opponent’s experience.
Moreover, Marvin also resides at a far lower World Boxing Organisation rankings as compared to Orlando. Cruz, 30, has been in a total 21 bouts and boasts 18 wins. He has pinned just nine of his opponents by knockout and lacks the ability to throw a powerful
jab in fact resides heavily on his resilience facet.
The bout will be a toe-to-toe one since both men are almost equal with a slight upper hand over each other. Marvin recently collected his career’s only loss from Wilfredo Vazquez Junior, a bout in which he had the golden chance of becoming the WBO super
bantamweight champion.
Since his last loss, the young lad is on a two-bout win streak and is coming from an impressive fifth round technical knout win over more experienced Carlos Fulgencio. Orlando, also known as the ‘El Olimpico’ or ‘El Fenomeno’, has also recently returned
on the win track after two consecutive losses to Cornelius Lock and Daniel Ponce De Leon.
The Puerto Rican Cruz grabbed his WBO Latino gold from Michael Franco after knocking him out in the very first round of the 12-round showdown. Since then he has defended it once against Alejandro Delgado.
The ‘Marvelous’ Marvin, will have a considerable height and therefore reach advantage at his disposal and if he uses this aspect optimally he might grab a convincing win by nullifying Cruz’s experience.
The odds at the moment are 50-50 on both sides only the initial rounds will tell as to who will collect a win. Marvin, if throws well-targeted jabs from a considerable distance, can grab even a knockout win.
Cruz, on the other hand, needs to come up with a plan to somehow halt Marvin from using his height and this can be done with swift agility and foot work.
