Maryland Terrapins’ Pete DeSouza out for season
Maryland Terrapins offensive lineman Pete DeSouza will be out for the remainder of the 2010 season after breaking both his legs.
The freshman was riding a motorized scooter on campus when he was struck by a vehicle turning left. The collision caused the 310-pound 6ft 6in lineman to fracture the bones in both his legs. The youngster will have to undergo surgery on Friday, 22 October
and is expected to make a full recovery, but he will not be suiting up again this season.
The youngster had just begun to shine for his team, being subbed in for two games to start the season, and had been starting for Maryland the past three weeks. The Terrapins have yet to announce the lineman that will take his place in the club’s game against
the Boston College Eagles on Saturday, 23 October.
Maryland had been working on rejuvenating their offence, which has tailed off since their 62-3 trouncing of Morgan State in week two.
The club has faded down the stretch and now sits 85th in the country in passing yards, averaging 185.5 yards per game. Meanwhile, their rushing game, which is usual a staple of the Terrapins program, has struggled, and is ranked 80th
in the country, averaging a mere 134.8 yards per game.
Fortunately for Maryland, the Atlantic Coast Conference has not been as strong as many suspected in 2010 and they still have legitimate chance at playing for the conference title.
The club sits at 4-2 with a 1-1 conference record. The record is good enough for third in the ACC Atlantic division, meaning the club will have to challenge the Florida State Seminole for top spot. With five games remaining against conference opponents,
including a match-up with the Seminoles the Terrapins have a legitimate chance at the division lead.
The Terrapins next game will be in Boston College’s Alumni Stadium on Saturday, 23 October.
