  1. There land grants aren't different from many in the early days of the Colonies. The purpose for a colony to have residents with the means to come over form up townships that could provide for mutual defense and also be part of a tax base. Generally, people were more likely to go someplace where settlers were already living and your neighbors could help you with Indians and wild animals. The Colonies also plenty of land to give out, claimed with a pen, that settlers would actually protect to make part of the colony.
