Maryna Zanevska ousts Kirsten Flipkens in the quarter-final - Tessenderlo Challenger 2012
World number 364, Maryna Zanevska, stunned the 182nd ranked Belgian, Kirsten Flipkens, in the quarter-final clash of the Tessenderlo Challenger on Thursday. She defeated the fifth seed in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
It was such an astonishing result considering a qualifier making it to the last four players of the tournament. The Ukrainian teenager is in emphatic run of form having won 30 matches this year and lost only twice. She is almost
unbeatable at the moment; will definitely improve her ranking a lot.
The 26-years-old Belgian was competitive in the opening set but forced to be a mere spectator in the second part of the match. The first set witnessed a swap of breakpoints at the start before both players registered successive
serve holds to push the scores at 3-3.
Another exchange of breakthroughs kept the scores together at 4-4. No player was ready to fall behind her counterpart. It was the most critical time and both players held their serves to move the scores at 5-5. The Ukrainian teenager
was the first to break serve for the third time in the set and luckily for her, she managed to hold on to the following serve game and took the opening set away.
A majestic upset was on the cards and it was expected considering the classic run of form of the Ukrainian. She was a very lively player on the courts, enjoying every successful rally and punching the air at the end of a successful
game.
She stunned her opponent with a stunning start to the second set; won first four game courtesy to a couple of breakpoints that completely wiped out any chances of a comeback for the superior ranked Belgian. The crowd was very frustrated
at such a dismal performance of their starlet.
Zanevska won the next two serve games and booked a spot in the semi-final stage of the tournament. She has already won last three challenger tournament on hard courts and her sublime run of form hasn’t disappointed at the clay
courts as well. She is definitely the strongest contender to win this title as well.
