Masa de maiz or masa harina?

I bought some masa de maiz on holiday and thought it was the same as masa harina, but tried to make it into tortillas, and it made a weirdly rigid paste with a gloopy glue-like flour liquid on the top. What's gone on?

  1. masa de maiz is usually cornmeal dough. Masa harina is its dried powdered form. Maybe you screwed up with your recipe?

  2. Maize = corn based meal

    Harina = bleached flour meal

    Masa de maize is for tamales/corn tortillas

    Masa de harina is for flour tortillas........
