Mascherano transferred, Meireles bought, The Reds spend wisely
With the transfer market about to close soon, it was predicted that we will see quite a few last minute signings. A lot of predictions were made and one of them has come true.
In one quick stroke Liverpool has bagged Raul Meireles, the Portuguese defensive midfielder. While this happened, Liverpool officially completed Javier Mascherano’s transfer as well and did not waste much time to get a replacement.
According to a media source, FC Porto got paid a whopping £10.7 million and moving Mascherano is expected to be a great signing for Liverpool. With ‘The Reds’ adamant on ending the league in the top four of the English Premier League to have a shot to win the Champions this year, this added a great gun to the ranks.
Javier Mascherano, is a defensive mid-fielder, where as Meireles is a very good all round mid fielder and Meireles’s long passes always turn out to be vital in a game as well as famous. The Portuguese player’s offensive qualities are a lot more superior, when compared with attacking qualities of Mascherano. Plus another thing that the fans just love about Meireles is that he has those distinct gritty trademarks that the Argentineans are famous for.
Meireles, was the 2010 World Cup’s best performing player from Portugal, and since then he has been on the hotlists of transfers in almost all the European Leagues. Meireles has been linked to Barcelona for some time now, but in the end Barcelona turned their heads towards Javier Mascherano.
A lot of football pundits thought that no matter what the other clubs tried, in the end ‘the Red Devils’ will catch the man from Portugal. He had been officially labelled as the hard man of the summer as he was the player that everyone wanted and no one seemed to be getting. There had been rumours and stories of linking this player to almost every major club and all the time increasing this player’s value and hype even more.
In the last week of the transfer window it was clear that a decision about this player would be made. Pundits said that a last minute deal would be signed for the player and that is exactly what happened in the end.
The Reds have had some other signings as well this week, pushing for the gold in the Champions League, Roy Hodgson is leaving out no expenses to make sure he proves every one wrong and at least makes his way to the Champions League.
With Jose Mourinho’s comments about Hodgson, that he is getting only worse with time and this is going to be another failure from the Reds
So as the famous saying goes to mock the players from Anfield, “which ship never docks at Liverpool? The Premier-Ship”.
Liverpool has actually signed Christian Poulsen and it is hoped by the Reds fans that Poulsen and Meireles make a powerful mid-fielding duo and become a solid wall in the back field. This would aid the team as that wall would give Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole a chance to comfortably focus on attack.
Among other news, there are a lot of rumours floating about Lucas Lieva leaving ‘The Reds’. Porto sold off their star player as there was only a year left in Meireles’s contract and the club was afraid that the players’ value would drop exponentially next year.
Liverpool paid £10.7 million, but this is actually a knock down price as the player is worth much more. This was definitely a smart buy for Roy Hodgson, who has used his limited funds very wisely.
