Mashonaland Eagles v Mid West Rhinos – Logan Cup – Match Recap [Day 3]
A fluent century from Mark Vermeulen guided the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mashonaland-Eagles-c814 a challenging 454-run target to chase during their ongoing Logan Cup first-class match, played at the Harare Sports
Club on November 15.
The Rhinos had maintained a dominant streak throughout the match, after having been put to bat first by the Eagles. Kyle Jarvis (18.1-5-37-4), http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tinotenda-Mutombodzi-c2684 (17-5-41-2) made strong attempts to keep the Rhinos in
check during their first innings. However, a handful of substantial contributions from Vermeulen (who top-scored for the team with 68), Simon Mugava (52), and Malcolm http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Waller-c95917 (42) saw the Rhinos reaching 265 before they were all out on day two.
The Eagles had managed to put forth a fairly competitive performance during their first innings. However, the major contributions came from the tail, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kyle-Malcolm-Jarvis-c71974 (48) scoring the bulk of the runs, while opener Chamu Chibhabha
chipped in with 42. The rest of the batsmen were unable to face up to the challenges posed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Chinouya-c1951 (17-1-61-5) and Neville Madziva (9-1-30-2), and day two saw the Eagles all out for 245.
The Rhinos, however, maintained a firm upper-hand on the third day of play. Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MA-Vermeulen-c1872 (146) joined forces for a 144-run stand for the second
wicket on day three.
Sibanda eventually fell prey to Utseya (28-1-136-2), but Vermeulen went on to team up with wicketkeeper skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BRM-Taylor-c1200 (68) for a 134-run third-wicket stand, which got the Rhinos up to 304.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Malcolm-Waller-c74039 (36) kept the team’s momentum going, and set up a 60-run partnership with Vermeulen. However, the 83rd over resulted in the dismissals of both batsmen – Waller was
run out by wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Regis-Wiriranai-Chakabva-c84623, while Vermeulen was trapped lbw by Jarvis.
Mugava (32) and Madziva (27*) kept the runs coming with a 58-run partnership for the 6th wicket, and after Mugava and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/EC-Rainsford-c1415 (4) were both sent packing by Muzarabani (9-2-38-2) in the 94th over, Madziva and wicketkeeper Nyasha
Mayavo (3*) saw the Rhinos up to a final total of 433 for 7 after which they declared.
Faced with a final target of 454 runs to chase, the Eagles kicked off their second innings with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CJ-Chibhabha-c1263 (16*) – however, the opening partnership yielded only 25 runs, after which Rainsford dismissed Chibhabha lbw. With Raza
and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/F-Mutizwa-c1426 (5*) at the crease, the Eagles finished at 33 for 1 by stumps on day 3 – requiring 421 runs, with 9 wickets remaining.
