Mason Raymond scores overtime winner as the Vancouver Canucks defeat the Colorado Avalanche
It wasn't a pretty goal, but Mason Raymond's overtime marker 28 seconds into the extra frame was enough to give the Vancouver Canucks two points with a 4-3 win over division rivals the Colorado Avalanche
on Tuesday 26 October.
How it happened
The Canucks and Avalanche traded goals in each period. When Colorado's David Jones opened the scoring in the first with his third of the season, Vancouver's Jeff Tambellini canceled it out with his second
of the year.
Colorado took the lead again in the second when Daniel Winnik scored his third of the year only to have Ryan Kesler tie things up for Vancouver on the power play a few minutes later with his third of the
season.
Vancouver took their first lead of the game in the third period when Peter Schaefer got his first of the season. Colorado tied things up with just over a minute and a half to go when Matt Duchene got his
second of the season to send the game to overtime.
Only 28 seconds into the extra frame and the Canucks got their winner when the Avalanche won a face-off deep in their own zone. Raymond threw his stick out tipping the puck away from defenceman Jonas Holos
and watched as the puck somehow managed to squeeze through the legs of Colorado goalie Peter Budaj.
What they're saying
Raymond has probably scored more memorable goals in his career, but his winner against Colorado was nonetheless an important one for the Canucks.
"It wasn't the prettiest, but we'll take it as a team and I'll take it as a player," Raymond said. "I saw him get the puck and go to head behind the net, I just gave it a good whack toward the front and
it went between (Budaj's) legs and in."
"You never want to give one up during the last couple of minutes," Raymond added alluding to the Colorado goal that sent the game to overtime. "Fortunately, we were able to get one to go in. It's a big
two points, especially in our division."
Despite the weak effort that won the game, Avs coach Joe Sacco was happy the way his goalie played over the 60 minutes.
"Peter played great for us," Sacco said. "He gave us a chance to win, and that's all you can ask from your goaltender."
The win for Vancouver hurdled them past the Avalanche for second place in the Northwest Division. They don't play again until next Monday November 1 when they host the New Jersey Devils.
The Avalanche next take on another Northwest Division opponent when they head to Calgary to take on the first place Flames on Thursday.
