  1. Edit: There are a few links if you google "freemasonry"

  2. Do you HAVE this thing?  I found from the NY Times archives someone had written a letter describing and inquiring about this in 1904; this person had been sent it from Riegel in Bavaria (Germany) ca. 1880s. The paper said it was not from a secret or anarchistic society but was something worn by people " with pronounced views about the equality of all men." The inscription and the 4 skulls represent the equality of the begger, the wise man the king and the emperor.

btw the inscription means "Who was the beggar, who the wise man, who the king and who was the emperor?"

  3. The Masons are not a secret society, you can purchase books on all their rituals in any large bookstore. The Scots and southern yanks tend to keep their meetings more secret.

There are stories that the opposing officers in the French and Indian war and in the War of Independence, who were Masons conferred together in "field lodge meetings" and decide many of the outcomes of battles to save their men. The war was not actually won, but the English officers, except Burgoyne, capitulated against the German King of England.

Many modern mason have lost the real reason for the Masons. As well as being a precursor to a builders guild or union, the early masons were from the French, "Frere Maison",  or brother of the house, this became the name "Free Mason". These free or secret houses were safe places for the Knights Templar to hide, on the run, from the Papal decree for their arrest, initiated by King Philip of France who owed the Templars large sums of money.

They fled to Scotland, North Africa and the West Indies, as they had the largest fleet in the world at the time.

The pirates skull and crossbones flag, evolved from the West Indies Templars, who were in Americas before Columbus, who was following their maps.
