Mass Cane plant?

Question

I am a very inexperienced plant owner. I've heard that a Mass Cane plant is the way to go if you have a "black thumb". It has been out on my patio in a big pot. It receives indirect sunlight basically all day long and some direct. It is SUPER dry and the leaves have turned brown. It also has a lot of little gnats in the soil. Is it not getting enough water? Should I place pebbles at the bottom of the pot THEN place the plant and dirt on top of that for drainage purposes? I'm super confused! Thanks!!
