The third and final instalment in Sam Shepard’s trilogy surpasses the million units sold mark and keeps on going.
EA marketed Mass Effect 3 as the biggest game of 2012 and to some extent the title did live up to its branding albeit, not entirely in the way that the game’s publisher would have expected.
The game was praised by critics though not unanimously, as was the case with the previous games in the series, and an overwhelming majority of fans were left dissatisfied with the ending as well. In fact, dissatisfied would be an understatement as the outcry
from the fans even prompted BioWare, the game’s developer, to actually consider releasing a new ending for the game.
However, despite all the criticism, Mass Effect 3 continues the high-standards set by BioWare in previous instalments of the game and although the ending may not have pleased many, the game itself is a triumph.
Whether gamers have an issue with it or not, Mass Effect 3 has gone platinum and then some, as it sold over a million units and then some, since its release.
The game managed to sell 1.3-million units in the United States alone and that too in its first month. That figure, it should be pointed out, does not factor in the sales of the game in other territories.
Not surprisingly, the Xbox 360 version of the game outsold its PlayStation 3 counterpart by a ratio of 4:1. To put a number on to things, the 360 version sold a total of 943,000 units over the 30 day period.
If one wants an idea as to how much that means in terms of revenue, well, if we take an average of $55 as the price of the game and multiply it by the number of units sold, i.e. 1.3-million we get a total figure of 989-BILLION!
Just kidding, the figure comes to around $71,500,000 or $71.5-million. Of course, that is just a rough estimate, but it should give one an idea of just how much money EA has made in the United States alone and that too in its first month of sales.
Pretty impressive.
