Mass Effect: Do party members automatically switch guns in combat?

Suppose I train Tali in both pistols and shotgun (and max them both). Will she automatically switch between the two in combat? It seems like she always uses her shotgun and never her pistol, even when the enemy is on the other side of the room.

No you must switch their weapons for them, basically the same way you use your biotic or tech abilities just click the weapon selection bumper and switch it to your other party memeber and select their weapon.

Remember though some of the characters, like you, aren't trained in some weapons and using a weapon that you or your party memebers aren't trained in is pretty much useless since they'll miss a lot and not do a whole lot of damage. When you select the weapon it wills ay if they are untrained in it, if it says nothing then they are trained in it.
