My friend is in a bad situation. She's 7 1/2 months pregnant. Her boyfriend and her just moved into a new house. (The moved everything yesterday). About two weeks ago, the landlord realized the pluming was not up to code. Currently they have no water and no utilities.
The boyfriend made a deal with the landlord that they would be refunded the amount of days without water. They payed first months and this month rent up front and hopefully be reimbursed next month.
She's upset because she's living with no shower, toilet, or laundry facilities. She has to either pee in the woods or drive to the store. Because she's pregnant, this happens 4x more than normal. And to take a shower or do laundry, she needs to drive to his parents' house 15 minutes away. Her boyfriend is telling her to suck it up and trust him.
My mom says that not only is that unlivable conditions, the landlord is required by law to place them somewhere livable. If she wanted to, she could call the board of health and have them deal with it.
I'm trying to find Massachusetts laws that protects my friend. I don't want her living in a house without water for 3 weeks - expecially in her condition. What laws are there that will protect her. I am having a hard time shifting through all the tenant protection laws. Can anyone help?
Thanks
