The outspoken President of the Sardinians has stated that his team wants to play in Cagliari but is unable to do so because of the rift it has with the city council.
Cellino has had a rift with the Cagliari authorities over his plans to build a new stadium for his side, and also regarding the renovation of the Casteddu’s Stadio Sant’Elia.
The dispute has been going on for quite some time and there has not been a definitive solution to the problem at hand.
The Isolani president had a meeting with the current mayor of the city some time before Easter where they talked about the possibility of undergoing some short-term measures.
As matters did not come a definitive end, Cellino made the decision of having the club’s home matches being played in Trieste. Trieste takes quite a while to reach from Sardinia, as the distance between the two places is mapped out to be 600 miles.
The remainder of the matches would now be played in Trieste at the Stadio Nereo Rocco. The passionate patron has made it a point that his point comes across to his fans
and the media, and during his speech at Sardinia’s university, the chief executive went on to state that his club was being pushed away from the city. He also commented on his views about politicians and felt they never stayed true to their words.
He further elaborated that he had no unresolved issues with the city mayor, but did not back away from putting in a snide remark in the end. He mentioned:
“We have been driven from Cagliari. The politicians are always the same - they talk a lot but do not produce anything. For 10 years we have read the same things in the papers.
I have no problem with [city mayor Massimo] Zedda, I could never play tug of war with a child.”
There have been talks of the supporters lodging a suit against the patron to cover for their expenditures of having to travel away for their own home matches. Cellino commented
on the situation by emphasising:
“It is not because of us that we have left the stadium - we have been virtually banished from Cagliari. The stadium is totally inadequate, in everything from the electrical
system to the stands.”
The club currently occupies the 14th position in the league and is just 4 points above the relegation zone.
