When it comes to MMO's, there's World of Warcraft, and then there's everything else.  10 million people can't be wrong--unless they're wrong.  You can download the game for free and give it a try--they have free 10-day trials:

You could also look into the private server scene if live WoW seems too expensive ($15 a month)--some of those servers have over 5,000 people playing on them...
