Master of Hounds makes it to the Kentucky Derby – Horse Racing News
The Run for the Roses is being held on 7 May, 2011. The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby this year will feature twenty horses. Amongst other prominent American thoroughbreds, there will be an addition of European colt, Master of Hounds.
The Irish trained three year old Master of Hounds will be making his way to Churchill Downs. A spokesman for Coolmore Stud confirmed Master of Hounds entrance in the Kentucky Derby. The bay colt is owned by Coolmore Stud’s John Magnier.
Aidan O’ Brien’s Ballydoyle team will be making a come-back to the grade one Kentucky Derby after 2002. Trainer Aidan O’ Brien is regarded as the equal of Todd Pletcher. He represented Johannesburg in 2002, which finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby. Gary
Stevens held the reins of Johannesburg.
O’ Brien is hopeful regarding the colt’s participation. He voiced his opinions by saying, “The Kentucky Derby is a great race. He handled the surface well out in Dubai and he's a horse that has tactical speed and we were delighted with his run. I’m sure
the race will be considered and will be spoken about.”
The colt will need a strenuous work-out and training from his trainer. His breeding is suggestive that the colt may easily race up to ten furlongs. He proved his medal by having to race after months and he did not show any visible effects of tiring in the
United Arab Emirates Derby.
Master of Hounds stood second in the 2011 UAE Derby. Ryan Moore was aboard the horse during the tournament. The race was his lone start of the year and also his first on a synthetic surface. He performed admirably in the UAE Derby, fighting for the winning
post. Khawlah won the race in the end.
He is sired by Kingmambo and was a favourite for the 2010 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf. Silk and Scarlet Syndicate are the breeders of the colt. Master of Hounds is currently residing in Ballydoyle in Ireland.
The colt has had a single prep before the race which might be worrisome. There are also speculations regarding his performance on dirt. Considering these facts, his entrance seems obscure, but considering his God given talent there is solace.
Coolmore Stud and O’ Brien might also be considering Jan Vermeer for the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic. Jan Vermeer brought an upset win in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud on 1 November, 2009. The Irish bred colt shares connections with Pennekamp
mare. He was third in the 2010 Dubai Free Irish Derby while jockey Heffernan Seamus was aboard him.
Master of Hounds has raced at Churchill Downs on 6 November, 2010, as he captured the sixth position. He was ridden by John Patrick Murtagh. He has an advantage over the other horses in that he will fly directly to Churchill Downs, instead of spending the
quarantine time in Keeneland Race Course.
