Masters Tournament: Bubba Watson earns first major victory - Golf News
The United States’ Bubba Watson parred the second playoff hole at the Augusta National Golf Club to earn the first major victory of his career at the Masters Tournament on Sunday, April 8, 2012.
His victory also marked the eighth first time major winner in a row, as Phil Mickelson was the last player to win the 2010 Masters, which was his fourth major win.
Watson, who along with his wife, Angie, recently adopted a one-month old baby boy, said that returning to home with a victory will be great fun.
"I never got this far in my dreams, so it's not a dream come true," he said. "It's a blessing. To go home to my new son will be a lot of fun".
"Golf isn't everything for me. If I would have lost today, it wouldn't have been the end of the world. To win is awesome, but I'll go back to real life next week. I still haven't changed a diaper".
Watson was tied for the top position with former Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen, after the fourth round finished on Sunday. Therefore, they were forced to enter the playoffs, where both of them pared their first playoff hole at the 18th.
Thereafter, they moved to the 10th hole when Watson’s tee shot went into the trees and Oosthuizen found the rough on the course.
The turning point of the game includes Watson’s second shot finding the green while Oosthuizen’s stopped just short of it.
Watson then two-putted the hole to finish with par and Oosthuizen had to congratulate him after finishing with a bogey.
"I had an opportunity at 10. I should have put one down the middle," said Oosthuizen. "Great stuff to him. He deserves it. It was a great day. We had a lot of fun".
Lee Westwood, who was looking for his first major victory of the career, again fell a bit short to tie for the third place on the leaderboard.
He was just two strokes short of the lead at eight-under par tournament score, tied along with Matt Kuchar, Peter Hanson and Phil Mickelson.
