Masters Tournament: Henrik Stenson scores high, but fails on the 18th hole in the first round
Henrik Stenson teed off the first round of the Masters on April 5, he was about to record the highest scores, but a quadruple bogey on the 18th took him down.
The Swedish professional golf player was planning to score a 63 on Thursday. He also desired to celebrate his 36th birthday by hitting the best at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
He opened the round in an impressive style and made an impressive eagle on the second hole. Then on the 5th hole, he made a birdie and another eagle on the 8th.
This was the most outstanding start from any golfer at the Augusta. On the front nine, he achieved a -5 and looked forward to making his birthday special.
He displayed enormous brilliant performance and proved his remarkable game. He amazed all the spectators and other field members, who could do nothing but look at his name on the top of the leaderboard.
Stenson opened the back nine holes of the Augusta again by making a birdie. He made his first bogey on the 14th hole and shot another on the 16th.
Moreover, he was successful in scoring his final birdie on the 15th. At that time, everyone thought that he would end this round by hitting near 63 or 64.
However, after displaying an amazing piece of performance, he carded a quadruple bogey on the 18th final hole and ruined his leaderboard position.
Till the 17th hole, he recorded a -5, but finished the first round by scoring a 1-under 71 at the end of the day. He felt down after losing the leading position and finishing outside the top-25.
“After 11, I didn’t hit one fairway off the tee, and that’s obviously going to cost you at some point,” Stenson said, “even though I didn’t expect it to cost as much as it did on 18”.
In an interview, after finishing the round, he said that the reason for such a mediocre performance on the 18th was his club. He is considering replacing the club from the second round.
“Well, I’ve got a temper, but it’s almost like I got past that stage,” Stenson said. “No full-length clubs anymore, or just forget about it? And I need my clubs tomorrow, so I choose that part”.
Now, he will tee off on Friday morning, with a plan not to be unimpressive throughout the event. If he is consistent in scoring, he can be the winner of the Masters Tournament.
