Question:

Masters of Public Policy or another avenue?

I recently graduated college and am beginning my search of what I want to do with my life. Lately, I have been looking at Masters of Public Policy programs, although I don't really have any experience. I'm looking to pursue a career that helps me inact policy that facilitates cultural exchange of ideas between youth groups. A keen attention to detail will tell you that, although the world may be shrinking because of globalization, the youth of this world are becoming obsessed with ethnocentric values and stereotypes.

As this is the starting point of my search, I would appreciate any advice that points me in the right direction.

  1. I'm going to offer you a generic answer because, tho' I know awfully little about the program and career you're considering, I don't know if anyone else here will know more.

Your best course to find answers for your questions would be to call people who are currently involved in that sort of career and ask them for a half-hour or so of their time.  Ask them about the career itself, the demands, the challenges, the triumphs.  Ask how they prepared academically, and ask if they wish they had done anything different or what were the most important parts of their career.

Another resource would be the career development office of your former college, tho' in a highly specialized situation like yours I think they'd be of limited utility.

  2. ok

  3. Public Policy - maybe

    Sociology - maybe

or another choice could be Public Administration.

The choices and avenues are endless. Basically, you need to get your degree and focus your studies on culture (sociology, social stratification, policy studies, ethnography, anthropology, etc)

I hope that helps some. Start by looking at top schools for policy studies (University of Chicago, Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, UCLA, Wisconsin) and go from there.
