Masters winner Charl Schwartzel top scorer in four majors this season
The reigning Masters champion Charl Schwartzel has apparently done well for the remaining three majors of the year, and although the South African did not go all the way to win any more of them, he has now concluded his major streak with the highest scoring
player in the four events on the aggregate.
Schwartzel won the Masters earlier in the year with a dramatic birdie streak on the closing holes, to lift his first major title of his career which was also his second start of his career at Augusta. He tee-ed off his final round at Augusta with a four
shot deficit and pulled in four consecutive birdies on the last holes to take over the fast approaching Aussies Jason Day and Adam Scott by two strokes. The South African posted another strong finish at the proceeding US Open where he finished for a joint
ninth and closed his Open Championship bid with another stellar joint 16th.
Starting off his PGA Championship bid at the Atlanta Athletic club last week, Schwartzel was hoping to bag in another major title before making the turn for the 2012, but fell in for disappointing opening rounds to lose the same.
“The whole week felt like I've been playing ‑‑ the course is just very penalizing.  You know, today I just maybe played a little bit more ‑‑ I want to say conservative maybe, but more clever.Like I said, the whole week, it really has been good ball‑striking
for me, and I've made a bunch of birdies, but just, you know, the first two days have been too many bogeys and double‑bogeys, and today I managed to prevent those,” Schwartzel said after closing his PGA Championship bid for a joint 12th; he carded
two birdies and dropped three shots in the final round.
The 26-year-old Schwartzel who hails from Johannesburg, has won eight professional events after turning professional in 2002. He plays on the European Tour, the PGA Tour as well as the Sunshine Tour and was the only major winner with a PGA Tour membership
until last week. He is the highest ranking South African on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) poised at 11th followed by Retief Goosen settled at number 24th.
Schwartzel posted his first high profile victory on the European Tour when he won the Dunhill Championship in December 2004. He went over to win several other titles through the span of five years. Schwartzel later hit a redundant span in his career when
he remained winless for the whole year in 2009. He was finally able to break the taboo in European Tour co-sanctioned Africa Open in January 2010 where defeated fellow countryman Thomas Aiken by one stroke.
