Mastodons score second consecutive win over Trojans in Mount Olive – Volleyball news
Using the winning edge of previous victory, the Mastodons of Indiana University of Purdue University at Fort Wayne scored second consecutive win over men’s volleyball team of Mount Olive University.
The second non-conference match between these two teams was played on Saturday, January 28 at the Kornegay, Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. The visiting Mastodons staged better play and clinched success by posting 3-0 (29-27, 25-20, 25-17) on board.
The IPFW squad finished the two-match series in Mount Olive with splendid 2-0 record.
The Mastodons started out well in the contest. They served and attacked with accuracy, and promptly went up on the scoreboard. Home side could not penetrate the power of unstoppable crosscourt shots and easily gave points to Mastodons.
Mount Olive trailed behind with seven points at the first technical timeout. John Nunns and Alex Rivero tried to overcome the IPFW but failed to achieve desired results. All their efforts went futile as Trojans stayed behind, whereas the Mastodons paved
their way to success in the first stanza. The Mount Olive dropped the set with narrow gap of two points, 27-29.
IPFW continued with success in the next set and picked up an early lead. The Trojans tried to come out of the blues and used different tactics. Mastodons denied all their efforts and took the score to 15-9.
The duo of Corey Frain and Ramon Burgos devastated the defence line of Trojans. The home side could not find the right rhythm to overcome the opponents and slipped another set at 20-25.
Third set was totally dominated by the Mastodons. The Mount Olive Team relentlessly remained in the cold waters and lagged behind from start to end. The guest team from Indiana University of Purdue University at Fort Wayne kept the operations of the game
well under hand and did not allow Trojans to create any unpleasant scenario for them.
The Mastodons restricted the Trojans behind the attack line and added quick points. Finally, the Mount Olive had to acknowledge the better status of Mastodons as they closed third set, 25-17.
Anthony Randolph of Mastodons emerged as the top scorer in the match as he contributed valuable 14 points. Ivan Matos and Ramon Burgos also went into double-digit scores and played an important role in IPFW’s victory. John Nunns and Alex Rivero of Mount
Olive scored 10 kills apiece, in the failing effort.
The charged-up Mastodons will return to action on Feb. 3 as they will collide with No. 7 Lewis at the Gates Sports Centre. On the other hand, the Mount Olive squad will try its luck next weekend. They are scheduled to take on St. Francis, Penn State, Ohio
State in the next week.
