Mat Latos’ dominant pitches help San Diego Padres overpower Colorado Rockies, 8-2 – MLB News
San Diego Padres’ starter, Mat Latos, had a notable day with the ball as he pitched 5 2/3 solid innings and struck-out five batters in the Padres’ 8-2 win against the Colorado Rockies, at Coors Field, Colorado, on May 15.
Latos gave away just two runs on four hits including one earned run and three walks. Latos improved his individual Win-Loss record by breaking the 10-game losing streak after this convincing win.
Latos, while speaking on his performance said, “I don't think there was a monkey on my back. It was something that happens in baseball. If it was easy everybody would be doing it. It's just good to get this one out of the way.”
The Rockies started the game pretty well as they got a 1-0 lead, when Seth Smith and Carlos Gonzalez both contributed a single run for his team. Smith completed his run by reaching at first base on the double-play relay of Eric Patterson. The second and
third inning remained empty for both teams due to outstanding throws of the pitchers. The Rockies’ runners were unable to score a run in the second inning.
The fourth inning proved fruitful for the Padres as they added three runs in it and went ahead, 3-1. Ryan Ludwick hit a shot for three-run homer off the left-centre field position to complete a three-run campaign during fourth inning. Todd Helton struck
a solo homer against Latos in the sixth inning, to cut-off his team’s deficit to 3-2.
Padres’ manager, Bud Black was pleased with the performance of Latos and said, “It takes some weight off of his shoulders. But it is one game that we can build off and gain confidence. He gave up a run in the first and then shut them down there until the
sixth when [Todd] Helton got him on a very good at-bat. Hopefully, it will let him exhale a little bit.”
During the seventh inning, the Padres scored five runs to secure an 8-2 lead. Chase Headley, Will Venable and Brad Hawpe each singled-off the right-field, while Jason Bartlett made two RBIs single in the end of this inning. The last two innings went score-less
for both sides.
Rockies’ starter, Jason Hammel was expensive as he allowed six runs on six hits in 6 1/2 inning pitches.
