A 6-wicket haul from veteran pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CB-Mpofu-c1219 went a long way in ensuring that the Matabeleland Tuskers maintained a firm upper-hand over the Southern Rocks on the first day of their ongoing first-class match in the Logan Cup, played at the Queens Sports
Club in Bulawayo on November 13.
The Tuskers managed to restrict the Rocks to a meagre first innings total of 152, after which they finished the day at 55 for 1, trailing by 97 runs with 9 wickets still remaining.
The Southern Rocks won the toss and decided to bat first – however, Mpofu (15.5-5-21-6) led the Tuskers’ charge, and aided by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moeen-Ali-c1990 (16-5-34-2) succeeded in bowling the Rocks out for a paltry first innings total.
The Rocks opened their innings with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kudzai-Maunze-c1816 (26), both of whom set up the highest partnership on their side – a 64-run opening stand. However, their time at the crease together came to an end in the 28th over, with the
dismissal of Maunze at the hands of Mpofu.
The Tuskers’ pace spearhead then went on to snap up Slater and wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alester-Maregwede-c43107 (13) off the crease, the Rocks were reduced to 84 for 4.
Peter Burgoyne (30) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Prince-Masvaure-c82674 (20) both attempted to revive their team’s innings, and set up a 47-run partnership for the 5th wicket. Their efforts got the Rocks up to 131 by the 54th over – however, Masvaure soon fell prey
to Ali, and Burgoyne was taken out of the game by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SC-Williams-c2464. From this point onwards, none of the remaining batsmen in the Rocks’ line-up were able to follow up with any substantial performances.
