Matadors lose to Long Beach State University by 3-0 on Saturday
Playing at the Walter Pyramid, the Matadors were playing their last match of the season.
Interestingly, the Matadors made an end the same as they had played out the beginning of their season. In their first match, the Matadors had been swept away by the University of California, Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team while recently; the sweeping
has been done by the Long Beach State University. This time around, the final set scores stood at the following numbers: 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23.
With their recent loss, the Matadors now have to shoulder a total of 22 defeats in this season. The number of wins that the Matadors have had total to be seven only. The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record of the Matadors does not show any better performance
than their overall season one. The number of times that they have managed to secure a win tally to be five. They have managed to scrap these victories against suffering a high number of 17 losses.
As opposed to the statistics of the Matadors, the 49ers have done much better for themselves both in the overall season as well as the MPSF. In this season so far, the number of times that they have been able to tally wins total to be 14.
Their numbers of losses are just shy of their win number as the defeats that the 49ers have suffered in this season amount to be 13. The MPSF record of the 49ers is better than that of their overall season one. The 49ers have been able to register victories
that are 12 in all. They have managed to earn themselves these wins at the expense of suffering 10 defeats.
The start of the first set of the match saw LBSU take the lead for themselves early on in the match at 5-1. The Matadors tried to close in the gap but they could not lessen the disadvantage by much. Before long, LBSU went on another run that extended their
lead even further at 15-9.
Once they had this lead, the 49ers did not have a hard time bringing the opening set to its finish with the Matadors trailing behind at 25-19.
The second set of the match saw the Matadors step up their game and give the 49ers a good challenge. Both the teams stayed neck to neck for most part of the match with the second set reaching ties a number of times.
However, during the middle of the game, the 49ers were able to take the lead at 19-13. Once they had the lead, the 49ers did not rest until they had bagged the second set at 25-17.
The third set of the match was the most competitive but the effort came in too late from the Matadors and LBSU was able to earn themselves a win at 25-23.
“The good thing from this season is that we can take this as a learning experience and improve in areas that we are lacking for next season. We will definitely be more experienced and hungry next year,” freshman outside hitter Brandon Lebrock of the Matadors
said.
