Match Play format, challenging for some but easy for a few – PGA Tour Update
The recent Professional Golfer’s Association Tour event of the WGC-Accenture Match Play championship depicted a perfect snapshot of all the top-64 players present on the field. Only the top two players remained in the final and competed against each other
with only one taking the title. This event showed the class and thoroughly challenged the physical fitness of all the players, as a few were up to the task. The Europeans dominated throughout the tournament and made a strong comeback in the golfing arena.
Lee Westwood who slipped down to world number two in the golf rankings with his fellow Ryder Cup team-mate German Martin Kaymer occupying the first spot. The current world number one showed the world why he is rated as the best golfer to lead the rankings.
Luke Donald, who won the match play championship, exhibited a great touch throughout the tournament and improved his position on the rankings.
Certainly Europe has been dominating the golfing circuit since the past one year or so, as they have made a strong comeback against the Americans. The Englishman Donald and Kaymer were paired against each other in the final of the championship and this was
the second straight year that the trophy was won by an Englishman.
The gallery is always cheering for Tiger Woods, who was eliminated in the first round by Thomas Bjorn. Critics have always been against Woods after his scandal was disclosed in front of the whole world. Loads of questions have been arising in the golfing
circuit about the former world number one. A dismal display by the Americans made the championship for them quite forgettable.
Woods slipped to the number five spot in the rankings and is the only American hanging in the top five slots. The Europeans have now captured all the top four rankings after almost 19 years. It was in 1997 when Tiger had to be content with the fifth spot.
From there on, he won his first major tournament of the Masters in the same year.
This is a bit too early for the critics to write off the Americans on paper. Many think that one of the players from Europe will win this year’s Masters Tournament which is going to be held in April. It was the Masters last year where Tiger roared again
and made a great comeback to the golfing circuit by finishing tied for the fourth spot.
All the top ranked Americans have high hopes this year of making a comeback and slapping the critics. Once again the columnists have declared Kaymer as the favourite player to win the Masters this year, as at times it affects a lot of players mentally.
Only time will tell if the Europeans will continue to dominate this year. The fans of Tiger are hoping that he will win the Masters this year and regain his number one spot, as he can also prove the critics wrong.
