Match between Black Sticks and Dutch women ends in a draw by 0-0 in 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy
Day three of the 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy concluded with a goal-less draw between the Dutch women and the Black Sticks women at Wegner Stadium, in Amsterdam, Netherland, on June 28. With this draw both the teams have qualified for Pool C in which
they will be up against South Korea and Argentina who qualified from Pool A.
The teams in Pool C will play for the podium spots, while the teams in Pool D will put their efforts for improving their placements.
The Black Sticks women displayed a gutsy performance and showed a lot of determination against the hosts, who are also the reigning Olympic Champions and hot favourite for the title. The Black Sticks women have qualified for the medal round for the
very first time in the history of Champions Trophy.
The coach of the Kiwis, Mark Hager, was pleased with the team’s performance by qualifying for the medal round and is hoping that the Black Sticks will reach the victory stand.
“It is pleasing to be in the top four playing in the semi-finals, we know we still have a long way to go but we seem to be tracking in the right direction,” Mark Hager, the coach of the Black Sticks women stated after they qualified for the medal group.
“It wasn’t the best hockey we have played in this tournament, but defensively we scrambled well in the circle and were able to shut them down. The girls are very happy, this is another step forward for us to be in the top four, it’s very exciting,”
Kayla Sharland, the co-captain of the Kiwis, also shared her views on the performance of the team in the prestigious tournament.
The game was played in a pretty uptight mode and was not much entertaining as both of the teams could not score even a single goal. Both of the halves told the same story as there was no goal in the entire match.
Both the teams created some wonderful opportunities, but could not be converted in to goals. The game was played in a defensive manner for most of the time and both teams attacked the goal-post on a few occasions, while much of the time was spent in
their own half. The match concluded at 0-0.
