Mate Pavic, Yaraslau Shyla advance in Boys’ Singles – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Mate Pavic beats Mitchell Krueger 3-6, 7-6(5), 8-6
Croatian Mate Pavic fought back after losing the first set to beat Mitchell Krueger of USA in three sets 3-6, 7-6(5), 8-6 in the first round of Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in London on Saturday. The match lasted
for two hours and 45 minutes.
Krueger drew the first blood as he broke the Croatian in the fourth game of the first set, holding his serve in the next game to take a 4-1 lead. The American capitalised on the single break of serve to win the set 6-3. Krueger
hit one ace and 64 percent of the first serves in the opening set.
Pavic and Krueger broke each other once in the second set, taking it to a tie-break. The Croatian grabbed a single mini-break in the tie-break and won it 7-5. Pavic converted one of the three break points he received on Krueger’s
serve and saved two of the three break points on his own serve in the second set.
The third set saw Pavic and Krueger holding their serve in the first twelve games to level the score at 6-6. The Croatian broke Kruger in the thirteenth game and served out the set at 7-6.
Pavic will face either Axel Alvarez Llamas of Spain or Evan Hoyt of Great Britain in the second round.
Yaraslau Shyla defeats Vladyslav Manafov 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3
Yaraslau Shyla of Belarus defeated Vladyslav Manafov of Ukraine in three sets 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to reach the second round. It took Shyla an hour and 53 minutes to undo his opponent.
Manafov needed a single break of serve in the first set to clinch it 6-4. The Ukrainian fired five aces and seven winners in the opening set. Manafov capitalised on the only break point opportunity he created on Shyla’s serve and
succeeded in saving both break points he faced on his own serve in the first set.
The Ukrainian and Belarusian held their serve throughout the second set, squaring off the score at 6-6 to force a tie-break. Shyla hit a superb volley to claim a mini-break in the tie-break, bagging it 7-5. The Belarusian hit six
aces and grabbed 84 percent of the first service points in the second set.
With winning momentum on his side, Shyla broke Manafov three times in the third set, clinching it 6-3. The Belarusian smashed sixteen winners and made seven unforced errors in the third set.
Shyla will meet either Oriol Roca Batalla of Spain or Filip Horansky of Slovakia in the second round.
