Mate Pavic, Dominic Thiem make it to the third stage of Boys’ Singles – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Eighth seed Croatian, Mate Pavic, had least trouble in disposing off Evan Hoyt of Great Britain in the second round of Boys’ Singles at the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday afternoon.
Playing on the Court 10 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, the Croat competitor took just 71 minutes to wrap up straight sets victory at 7-6(3), 6-2, to qualify for the third round of
the Grand Slam event.
The contest appeared evenly posed in the opening set, as Hoyt gave some tough time to Pavic before dropping the set in the tie breaker round. Once bagging the opener, the Croat rocketed away to victory in the second set by completely
blowing away Hoyt in just 28 minutes of play.
Pavic was phenomenal with his serve, delivering 74 percent of it on target and he clinched 35 out of 40 first serve points in the game to remain on top. He struck three break points to his opponent’s serve in reply to his one serve
break, en route to victory.
The opening set went on neck-to-neck, with both players exchanging one serve break each, before a tie breaker round was enforced into play. Pavic registered two mini-breaks to wrap up the opening set at 7-6(3) and then continued
with his winning momentum in the next set as well. He stung two serve breaks to oust Hoyt at 6-2, moving into the third round of the tournament, where he will face Frederico Ferre Silva of Portugal for a place in the quarter-final draws.
The other player to qualify for the third round on Tuesday afternoon was the seventh seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, who defeated Joshua Ward-Hibbert of Great Britain in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. The contest lasted for 75 minutes
before the bleak Briton submitted to the aggressive Thiem, letting him into the third round of Wimbledon.
Despite of a below par serve accuracy of 46 per cent, Thiem clinched 21 out of 28 first serve points in the matchup, while conceding five double faults and firing 18 winners. He broke Ward-Hibbert three times in the opener to get
one up at 6-2 but faced some resistance from his opponent in the following set. The Briton hung in the second set until Thiem broke his serve in the twelfth game to seal victory at 7-5.
The Austrian will face Julien Cagnina of Belgium in the third round for a place in the quarter-finals on Wednesday afternoon.
