Mate Pavic ousts Frederico Silva to reach Boys’ Singles quarterfinal – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Eighth seed Croatian player, Mate Pavic, stood tall once again at the Wimbledon Championships, when he defeated the Frederico Ferre Silva of Portugal in the third round of the Boys’ Singles category on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old Croat continued to impress the tennis fans with his amazing skills. He exhibited tremendous courage and resilience to recover from one-set deficit and conclude victory in the third set at 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, taking one
hour and forty two minutes of play.
Pavic had a sloppy start to the contest and dropped the opener early to fall on the back foot at the beginning of the match. The Croat then regrouped quickly to bounce back in the very next set and levelled the match with one set
a piece, enforcing a third one. Silva suddenly lost his steam in the final set and his errant stroke play led to his eventual downfall in the contest, letting Pavic in the quarter-final of the Wimbledon Championships.
Both contestants had ordinary first serve precision in the matchup but Pavic differentiated from his opponent by reeling off 36 out of 44 first serve points in the game. The Croat fired 15 cracking aces to his rival’s court and
registered 28 winners en route to victory. He converted five of his 10 break opportunities, while dropping his serve three times in the competition.
The Portuguese appeared in total control of the game in the opening set and it looked as if Silva is well on his way to produce an upset by defeating the eighth seed in the tournament. Pavic broke once in the opening set but conceded
10 unforced errors, including three double faults to assist Silva on top of the game. The Portuguese registered two break points and belted nine winners to clinch the first set at 6-4.
Silva had the contest under his control in the second set until Pavic stung a crucial serve break to shatter the momentum of his opponent. The Croat bounced right back in the game by sealing the second set at 6-4 and then continued
with his aggression in the final set as well.
Silva tended to crumble the pressure of defeat and committed a number of silly mistakes before Pavic delivered the final blow to conclude victory at 6-3. The Croatian will next face Kaichi Uchida of Japan in for a place in the
semis of the Grand Slam event.
