Mater Dei boys volleyball team defeats Mira Costa on Saturday
The Mater Dei boys volleyball team was able to defeat Mira Costa by 3-2 on Saturday.
The match between the two teams was part of the CIF Southern Section Division I boys volleyball quarterfinals. Mira Costa was handed out a defeat in the home court of the Monarchs.
By the time that the Monarchs were celebrating their hard earned victory over the number one ranked Mira Costa, who were heading out of the court in mild shock at the loss of the quarterfinal, the scoreboard read as 29-27, 20-25, 25-14, 18-25 and 15-9.
The Mustangs have had a spectacular record to show off in this entire season. With their recent defeat, they have now registered a total of two losses. Unfortunately, the second loss has translated into a halt in the CIF playoffs. As opposed to the defeats
that the Mustangs have suffered, the number of times that they have been able to tally victories in this season is 33.
The first set of the game started off in a highly competitive fashion. Mira Costa did not let down its high level of play but the Monarchs also did not fail to give their rivals a significant challenge. Both the teams stayed neck to neck with each for most
part of the match. Neither the Mustangs nor the Monarchs were letting the other take the lead for a long period of time.
As the set drew to its close, it became more intense. In the struggle that followed during the final stages of the opening set, the Monarchs were able to bag a win and assert their dominance at 29-27.
Losing on such a close call to the Monarchs did not sit well with the Mustangs. They started the second set of the match with an earnest determination to even the score. The increased energy of the Mustangs was hard to deal with for the Monarchs and they
ended up losing to Mira Costa at 20-25.
The Monarchs did not let the loss of the second set of the game overwhelm them and played competitively in the third set of the match. The Monarchs played in a highly impressive fashion and made it an easy job to bag the third set at 25-14.
The Mustangs did not give up and took the match to a deciding fifth set by winning the fourth one at 25-18. However, the final set of the match was secured by the Monarchs at 15-9.
“We knew we had a shot when we knew we had them here at home,” Adam Cutrell, the Mater Dei coach said. “We were so excited. The guys were just talking about it all weekend. They were so excited. We used the energy of the crowd and that helped us prevail.”
