Matera Italy??

Question

Has any one ever been there? or live there? or can tell me a little about it? I've done some resurch about it online, but i would like to know more on like a personal experience level. In Matera, do they speak the regular dialect of italian? Do alot of people live there? From what iv'e seen its looks like its poor conditions of living, but i'm not sure if it possibly has modernized more over the year.
