Question:

Material differences in America and Europe?

In about ten days I'm taking a trip to Europe: France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. I'm staying with a family for a part of it and am making a photo album. I want to show them about American culture, but I'm not sure what they don't have there that we might, i.e. electronics, clothing, etc. Also if there are certain things that may look different, i.e. roads, phones, etc.

I have all the basics like my school, church, house... But I need to know from someone with experiences in the countries that knows some of the differences. Ideas that we may take for granted, but are unheardof in other countries.

  1. I live in Germany and have traveled to France, Italy and Switzerland.

Electronics and clothing are pretty much the same. Not the same name brands, such as Hollister, Aeropostal, American Eagle. But they have Nike, Adidas, Levis.

I would suggest taking pics of the highways/interstate, malls, large vehicles (4x4 trucks, SUV's) playground at a park, the rooms in your house, your bike, your grocery store.

The roads here are so small and the vehicles are smaller and look a little different, malls are almost non existant, and  we have the almost all the things that there are in the US its just really different here.

  2. maybe stuff like prom pics and pics of your special holidays and stuff... also your huge roads and cars.. youll notice that everything is smaller and older in europe.. maybe some american chocolates lol :D

  3. Most of Europe is more advanced, technologically and fashion-wise than we are, so electronics and clothing would be a bit strange... unless you brought with you Native American, Hawiian, or Central/S. American examples.

You might take pictures of how people your age dress, though because that will probably be a little different.  If you're going to a well populated center of any one of those countries, the clothing wont be much different -- but in rural areas, they might show a lot less skin than here. ;)

The plants where you live might be different -- the US stretches over vastly different types of geography that Europe does not -- like the SW deserts and the flat expansive prairies.

  4. Peanut butter and cereal come to mind
