if a shower ceiling is low and we use the drywall with the purple paper, what else should go on there to finish it off? Is there a plastic sheet (like backsplash material) that would be applied to the drywall or can it just be painted ? if painted, is there special shower or high moisture paint needed to protect everything? please advise.

  1.   If the ceiling is low or a "dropped" ceiling in a shower , you can tile it.  Lower ceilings are a bit more moisture prone because of splashing and humidity.. Use your moisture resistant and   thats all resistant  as normal tape , seal and at least primer and tile..  Tile the area above the shower also to tie it together and help protect your new shower  GL

  2. Since the ceiling normally doesn't get wet, you can use what's called "greenboard", also known as "MR" (moisture resistant) drywall. Use either 1/2" or 5/8" greenboard, tape, spackle and finish it as you would any drywall. Use a satin-finish paint (not a "flat" paint) to finish the new drywall. You could also use "cement-board", which is the material normally used for shower/tub splashwall areas, but in the case of a ceiling, since it normally isn't a high moisture or splash area, greenboard is fine.

  3. I'm assuming the drywall with the purple paper is basically the same stuff as greenboard. Greenboard is most commonly installed in damp areas such as bathrooms. It is water resistant, but not waterproof. It is fine for ceilings and general walls in the bathroom. If you know the wall will get wet (tiled shower surrounds, tiled floor, etc) you'd want to use a concrete based board such as hardibacker. But for your project, the water resistant stuff is more than enough for the ceiling. just prime and paint it, and you're all set.

  4. before you paint varnish with an oil base product. That is what me did before green board.  Or use FRP (aplastic panel) at your home centers

  5. Low ceiling is exposed to lots of moisture. Best bet is to cover it with ceramic tile. You can use BackerBoard which is SCREWED in and then apply adhesive with the tile. Butt the tiles together to leave minimum grout lines. Using DuroBoard  [Cement board] is not recommended because of installing it on a ceiling is difficult due to it's weight. The backerboard  is lightweight and can be put over sheetrock/greenboard.
