Most tennis rackets today are made from light-weight graphite composites with such materials as fibreglass.

Kevlar (poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide) is a high performance polymer.

    *  Titanium has a low density and its’ alloys are light-weight and have a high

tensile strength. The element has the same strength to steel but is 40% lighter. It is also durable.

At ball impact the mechanical energy produced is transformed into an electrical response making the racket stiffen. This means that the energy from impact is given back to the ball, the force of the ball on the strings is the force that is returned to the ball. This makes the racket much more powerful and efficient.

According to Herfried Lammer (racket sport R&D director at Head), the chip “captures the energy and gives out information on when to release it”. The microchip is able to detect the impact and transform the energy extremely quickly, thus changing the shape of the intellifibers in under a millisecond.

Not only does the microchip stiffen the racket but it also reduces up to 20% of the vibrations from impact because the electrical energy doesn’t produce vibrations.

The market for intellifiber is growing, the system has been used for additional dampening systems and has now also been introduced to the slopes where it is found to be very effective in skis and snowboards.
