Question:

Maternity Leave, Taking Time Off..............?

I'm a new teacher and I'm getting married in about 2 years. I'd like to have children soon after that. But, I'll only have 2-3 years of teaching experience.

I know I'm allowed maternity leave, but I'm worried it will look bad if I have a baby and take time off before I'm tenured. I plan on going back to work when my leave is up. Unfortunately, my Fi and I need to have two incomes.

Does having a baby and taking time off bad for newer teachers?

  1. All districts should have a policy on maternity leave. As far as my district is concerned, their is no penalty if you pregnant, obviously, but you should look into disability insurance offered either through your district or on the side. The district will have you use up your sick days for when you are out, after that they start paying your sub with YOUR money. If you have insurance then your insurance will cover a certain percentage of the subs pay and a smaller portion will come out of your pay check.

You taking time off should not be a deciding factor of whether you are qualified to teach or not. To calm your anxiety talk to your Human Resources person at the district and  your principle.

  2. I've had plenty of friends who have had babies while teaching, and a couple did do it in their first two years. Here, you will get tenured after your second year.

I would talk to the folks at your HR/personnel department in the district office to get a sense of "maternity policy" in the district- it is perfectly legitimate to ask about this, especially since you are getting married soon.

It would also be a good idea to talk to your union site representative so that you also understand any limitations/ restrictions/ contractual obligations specific to temporary/ probationary teachers.

Just a note. The couple of friends who had babies in their first two years ended up leaving the profession soon after. They found it was too much to start their new, very demanding career with a new family. Not that it will happen to you- but it is a good reality check.

    Good luck!

  3. definitely not- i had a baby in my 3rd yearof teachign in america and i made a commitment to come back the next school year a math was hard to hire.

when u get there take the time  off that u need!
