Mateusz Kowalczyk and Thomas Schoorel clear second qualifiers - Szczecin Challenger 2012 CH
Mateusz Kowalczyk defeats David Guez 7-5, 7-6(4)
Right-hander, Mateusz Kowalczyk, gave a shocker to the French, David Guez, in the second qualifying round of the Szczecin Challenger, in Poland. The local challenger collected his 7-5, 7-6(4), victory against his competitor on
the eve of Saturday.
The 29-year-old Frenchman drew the first blood and secured a 2-1 lead in the third game. However, the scores squared off to 2-all. He still struggled hard to take over the game plan and busted the Polish’s serve in the sixth game,
protecting a 4-2 score. Kowalczyk picked up pace towards the end and initially levelled the scores to 5-all by the seventh game and then eventually nudged forward to wrap up the last two games with a 7-5 score.
In the final set, the challenge became tougher as both the contestants desperately battled each other for getting into the driving seat. Like before, the scores evened out four times, although Guez subjugated his rival for the
initial part of the set, his pace gradually died down, resulting in a tiebreaker. The 25-year-old Pole battled heroically and concluded the match with his 7-6(4) win.
Thomas Schoorel ousts Tomasz Bednarek 6-1, 6-3
World number 242nd, Thomas Schoorel trounced the local challenger, Tomasz Bednarek, in the second qualifiers round of the Szczecin Challenger. The Netherland’s professional summed up his straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 triumph
on Saturday.
Both the players were unable to hold their initial serves in the opener but the 23-year-old confidently broke the Pole’s serve in the fourth game, brining the score line to 3-1. Schoorel confidently made his way without facing
any difficulty and conquered the first set with a 6-1 score.
In the second set, the 30-year-old local contender miserably failed to secure his dominance but bestowed the initial three games upon Schoorel, who stamped his 3-love lead. Although he struggled hard to upset his rival, his efforts
proved insignificant. The right-hander Dutch contender concluded the set with his outstanding win of 6-3.
The duo has encountered each other for the second time and Schoorel preserved his 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series. Previously he prevailed over Bednarek in the second qualifying round of the Alphen Challenger in Netherlands.
