what is 2a^2 - 1a^2? (2a squared minus 1a squared)

    since the a^2 are the same, it's just like saying 2 apples - 1 apple = 1 apple.  If the variables or exponents were different, then it would be like 2 apples - 1 orange (which you can't do)
