  1. figure out the factors of 24 and 3 first, and then see which could add to -17. in this case you could use 8 and 3 for 24, and 3 and 1 for 3. since

3 times 3 is 9, you could add that to 8 and get 17.

    so you ansewr is

    (8m-3)(3m-1)

expand it to check that you have factored correctly.

  2. 2

  3. Think of it like this:

You need to separate the m squared so that you will be left with m when you multiply your two factorized answers. So, write it like this :

    am   c

    bm   d

    where a*b=24, and c*d=3

    but also a*d+b*c=17

(remember when you write your answers, go across your little grid)

    Now list all the factors of 24 : 1*24, 2*12, 3*8, 4*6,  -1*-24, -2*-12, -3*-8, -4*-6

                                   for 3   : 1*3  ,-1*-3

using trial and error that fits the above description, you get that a=12, b=2, c=-3, d=-1

So, the factorized equation is (12m*-3)(2m*-1)

It sounds a bit complicated but i'm sure you'll be fine!!!

    cheers~

  4. Blue Cheese is correct.  A trick for doing the 24m^2 (a term w/ several factors) part is the following:

    (24m...)(24m...)

    Now do 24 x 3 = 72

Now find two factors of 72 that add up to -17, -9 and -8.

Now substitute them back into the problem:

    (24m-9)(24m-8) and reduce:

(8m-3) is the first term b/c both 24m and -9 are divisible by 3

(3m-1) is the other term b/c both 24m and -8 are divisible by 8

In conclusion, the answer is (8m-3)(3m-1)

  5. 559m + 3

  6. use quadratic formula A=24 B= -17 C=3

M= (-b plus or minus square root b squared minus 4ac) all divided by 2a

    the answer is (m- (16/48))(m-(18/48))
