  1. -3 l 2n+5 l = -9  divide both sides by -3

    l 2n+5 l = 3  its absolute value, so

    2n+5 = 3  -or-  2n+5 = -3  subtract 5 from both sides of both equations

    2n = -2  -or-  2n = -8  divide both sides of both equations by 2

    n = -1  -or-  n = -4

  2. -3 I 2n+5 I = -9

    so,

    I 2n+5 I = -9/-3 = 3

    then,

    2n+5 = 3        or    2n+5 =-3

    2n = 3-5=-2    or    2n = -3-5=-8

    finally,

    n = -2/2 = -1  or     n = -8/2 = -4

    solution is -1 or -4
