Math Question that I need help with ?

A blast furnace at the steel mill shuts down automatically if the temp. in the furnace differs from 3200 degree F by more than 75 degrees. For what temperatures will the furnace continue to operate? For what temperatures will the furnace shut down?

this is a math problem that I have to do, and alot of people are getting diff. answers any help would be appreciated.

  1. It is operating at 3200 °F and can go up or down as much as 75° without shutting down.

    It operates from 3125° to 3275°

    If the temperature differs by more than 75° it Shuts Down.

    Below 3125° it shuts down (but at 3125° it operates).

    Above 3275° it shuts down (but at 3275° it operates).


  2. You would need to set up an inequality for this one.

    Since the temperature of the furnace can operate exactly 75 degrees more or less than 3200 you need to use the greater/less than *or equal to* symbol.

    3200+ 75 = 3275

    3200- 75 = 3125

    3125 < X < 3275.

    Remember, those are greater than or equal to signs, with underlines, i just cant do it on my keyboard.

  4. it wud shut down for temp below 3125 degrees F and above 3275 degrees F

    wud operate between these levels
