1. I really don't understand how the correct answer can have more thumbs downs than any of the incorrect ones...

Here's the explicit way: List the possible outcomes:

    HHH

    HHT *

    HTH *

    HTT

    THH *

    THT

    TTH

    TTT

The starred ones are the outcomes with exactly one tail. Count them up: 3. Since there are 8 total outcomes, the probability is 3/8.

    ----------

    Method 2:

    The probability of any one outcome happening is 1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/8.

There are 3C1 = 3 ways to get exactly one tail.

Thus the probability of getting exactly one tail is 3*1/8 = 3/8.

  2. 1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2 =1/8

  3. 1 to 6

  4. 1 out of 6 - because the coin has two sides and you are flipping it three times. If you multiply 2 x 3 that gives you six.

  5. 3/8
