Math help please, only 1 QUESTION though haha :]?

Question

i only have 1 question about my homework, yay !

i actually do my homework unlike someee people here. x.x

so, here's the ?

if one side of a square is x, and a whole number, is there any possible way that you can find a number to equal x that is the same value for both area and perimeter

i tried lots say x = 5, the area would be 25 and the perimeter 20 so that wouldn't work :(

the square has 4 sides, obviously.

Each side is 4

4x4=16 (area)

and 4+4+4+4=16 (perimeter)

Let x = the length of one side of the square

the formual for the perimeter of a square is 4 times the length of one side or:   Perimeter = 4X

The formula for the area of a square is the length of one side squared

Area = x^2  

if the  area and perimeter are the be the same number then

4X = X^2      or  puting this in standard form:

x^2 - 4X = 0

factor the left hand side of the equation

x(x - 4)  = 0   so either x = 0  or x = 4

consider x = 0  then there would be no square so reject this answer

consider x = 4   Then the perimeter would be 4 (4)  = 16

                        and the area would be 4^2  or 4times4 = 16

so the length of one side is 4 units.

However you might remind your teacher that while the numbers are equal the measures are not since one is linear and the other is area.

The area has to be x * x, and the perimeter is 4 * x.  So, for them to be the same, x has to equal 4 -- then the area and perimeter will both be 16.

If the square has 4 sides, then your answer would be 4. Then again, I've never heard of a square having 6 sides. In any case, you want the equations for area and perimeter to look the same so you get the same answer. Using x=4, you get this:

Area: 4*4=16

Perimeter: 4*4=16
