  1. g + b = 29

    g = 3(.5)b - 1

  2. Let's set up your variables first.

    b = number of boys

    g = number of girls

    g = 3/2b - 1

    g + 1 = 3/2b

    2/3g + 2/3 = b

    b = 2/3g + 2/3

    Try to find key words in the problem. Words like "is" is the same thing as "equals". Also, you don't always write the equation in the same order as the problem says it.

    Now you have to rearrange your equation to get the "b" variable on one side. To undo what's been done, you have to do the inverse. For example, if 1 has been subtracted to one side, you have to ADD one to both sides. If one side has been multiplied by 2/3, you have to divide both sides by 2/3 (which is the same as multiplying 3/2).

    Hope this helps.

  3. g girls

    b boys;

    g+b=29

    g+1=3*(1/2b)

    g=29-b

    29-b+1=3/2b

    30= 5/2b

    b=12

    g=17

  4. boys + girls = 29

    girls + 1 = 3 X boys/2

    so;

    girls = 29 - boys

    29 - boys + 1 = 3 X boys/2

    30 - boys = 3/2 X boys

    30 = 3/2 X boys + boys

    30 = boys(3/2 + 1) = boys (2.5)

    30/2.5 = 12 = boys

    12 + girls = 29

    girls = 17

  5. x + (1/2x)3 - 1 =29

    1x+1.5x=30

    2.5x= 30

    x= 12

    12 boys

    17 girls

  6. x = number of boys in class

    x/2 = half of the number of boys

    So 3x/2-1 = number of girls

    3x/2 - 1 + x = 29

    5x/2 =30

    5x= 60

    x = 12 boys

    29-x = 17 girls

  7. boys =x

    # girls =3x/2-1

    the equation is than x+3x/2-1=29

    solve to find x the # of boys, then calculate the # of girls

    x+3x/2=30

    2x+3x=60

    x=12

    therefore there are 12 boys and 17 girls..

    Good Luck!
