Graph the system of inequalities on your paper. Please provide only one ordered pair (x, y) that will work for both system of inequalities.

To earn full credit you must prove your answer by substituting the (x, y) order pair into both inequalities. Show all work for each inequality. 5 pts. for each.

y<3x 1

y>-2x-4

  1. First off, you're going to graph them as though they were equations. y = 3x + 1 and y = -2x - 4. I presume you know how to do that.

When you graph them, both of them will be graphed as dotted lines. The dotted line indicates that the line itself is not a part of the solution set. You know that because it's "less than" or "greater than" in each case. If it were whatever "or equal to", then the line WOULD be part of the solution set and you'd graph it as a solid line.

Once you have the line, you're going to have split the coordinate plane into two parts. Only one side is the solution set. The quickest way is to find a point which is obviously not on the line and plug it into the inequality. If it works, that's the right side. If it doesn't, then it's the other side. For instance, consider your first inequality: y < 3x + 1. If possible, I like to use the origin (0, 0) because 0 is easy to work with. If we plug that in, we get 0 < 1. As this is not true, it means the solution set is on the other side of the line from the origin. You then shade the portion of the coordinate plane on that side of the line.

Since you have two inequalities, you will shade the proper side of each line. You'll end up with a region that was shaded both times. That's the set of points that is in the solution set for both inequalities. Pick one point in there as your answer. Plug that same point into both inequalities and show that it works for both.
