How much does a fish weigh if its tail weighs 4 kilograms, its head weighs as much as its tail and half its body, and its body weighs as much as its head and tail together.

EASIER-

Tail- 4 kilograms

Head- Tail and half its body

Body- Head and tail together

Please help? And if you could, please add how you figured out the problem. THANKS

  1. t= tail

    h=head

    b=body

    t=4

    h= t + 1/2 b

    b = h+t

    h=4 + 1/2b

    b=h+4

    h=4+1/2b

    -h=-b+4 -->just rearranged it

    Adding the two equations...

    -1/2 b+8=0

    1/2 b = 8

    b = 16

    Since b = h+ t and b=16 and t=4 then

    16 = 4 + h

    So h = 12

    Adding b+h+t to get the total weight, the answer is 12 + 16+4 = 32 kg.

  2. I can't figure this out.  I'm working it out on paper but i can't seem to get an answer that works.

    *I showed the same work as the guy below me but I don't think the answer is 32 kgs because you added the tail + head + body and i think that the body is supposed to = head + tail but we're on the right track.

    I see the mistake I made...the third guy is right.  It's 16 kgs.

  3. Use basic algebra to get the answer:

    T = 4kg

    H = 4kg + 1/2B

    B = H + T

    Substitute the known values into the equation

    B = 4kg + 4kg + 1/2B

    Move the unknown values to the same side of the equation by subtracting 1/2 B From each side

    B - 1/2 B = 4kg + 4kg + 1/2 B -1/2B

    Simplify

    1/2B = 8kg

    Multiply by 2 to get rid of the fraction:

    2(1/2B) = 2(8kg)

    B = 16kg
