The length of a rectangle sign is 10ft. less than twice its width. Its perimeter is 118 ft, Find the length and width.

  1. Set up equations to express the facts you know, in terms of the unknowns

    L = length

    W = width

    If the perimeter is 118 feet, then we can say

    2L + 2W = 118

    Cool?

    And we also know that

    L = (2W - 10) (2 times the width, and minus 10 feet)

    So plug the above into the first equation, substituting L

    2(2W - 10) + 2W = 118

    Expand out the brackets

    4W - 20 + 2W = 118

    And if we combine the Ws....

    6W - 20 = 118

    6W = 138

    Divide both sides by 6

    W = 23

    And if that's true, then

    2L + 2W = 118

    2L + 46 = 118

    2L = 72

    L = 36

    Done!
