ok here we go...i am sure this has come up before.

if 3 people pay $10 each for a hotel room that is $30

but today is super deal tuesday so the room is actually $25

a busboy is given the task of returning 5 one dollar bills to 3 men

the busboy keeps $2 to make it easier

each man is given $1 therefor they each paid $9 instead of $10

3 men paying $9 is $27...the busboy has $2

add up the money men have $3 busboy has $2 and the hotel has $25

its all there right?

BUT! each man paid $9 which means they payed $27 all together and the busboy got to keep $2...that is only accounting for $29

ALSO! if the group payed $27 and they have three $1s and the busboy has $2 that is $32...so uh...maybe im just off my rocker...hope someone can help me...without attitude

  1. each man didn't pay 9, they payed 8.3 each sooo

"each man paid $8.3 which means they payed $25 all together and the busboy got to keep $2...that is only accounting for $30"

"ALSO! if the group payed $25 and they have three $1s and the busboy has $2 that is $30...so uh...maybe im just off my rocker...hope someone can help me...without attitude"

Basically, 25 divided by 3 is 8.3 so when the busboy "kept 2" to make it "easier" is kinda screwed things up, but there is no evil math warlock stealing decimals here. jk, but yes its 8.3 not 9 each.

  2. they pay 30, the manager gives back 5

the busboy gives each man 1 and keeps 2

    so its 30 - 5 = 25

    3 + 2 = 5

which accounts for all the money

  3. this riddle is meant to trick you so that you do the math wrong. In truth, they didn't pay $9. They all paid $10. But they think that they paid $9 because that is what they got back, even though they didn't each pay $9.

It makes you think that they did though.

the math is: $30 is paid. $3 is given back. $2 is kept. that equals $25, which is the price of the room.

  4. Allow me.

Each man paid $9 for a total of $27.  You then say the busboy has $2.  But that is included in the $27.  When you say each man paid $9, what you're saying is, they each have a dollar, and the other 9 has gone to the hotel, either to the busboy or the cash register.

The mistake is when people say 9x3 is 27 and then add the busboy's $2 when it's already counted in the $27.

    Hope that makes sense.

  5. yeah like u said the men EACH have $3 and the busboy has $2 and the hotel has $25 dollars so $3 + $2 + $25 = $30  maby u were thinking to hard on the question
