Is the statement "A number is always greater than its opposite" true?

1.)Yes; all positive numbers > all non-positive numbers.

2.)Yes; all positive numbers are > their opposites.

3.)No; all non-positive numbers are not > their opposites.

4.)No; all non-positive numbers are > their opposites.

    It's because the statement says "a number" so that number could be positive or negative. For a positive number the statement is true, but for a negative number the statement isn't true.


  2. It would seem that the answer to this question could be either 1 or 2, unless, somewhere in the question, the concept of absolute values is introduced.

    The opposite of -5 is 5 but -5 is not greater than 5.
