  1. You can go two ways with this, since | 5 - x | = 6

    then

    5 - x = 6

    or

    5 - x = -6

    We'll start with the first one..

    5 - x = 6

    -x = 6 - 5

    -x = 1

    x = -1

    or

    5 - x = -6

    -x = -6 - 5

    -x = -11

    x = 11

    so, x = either -1 or 11

    Good Luck.

  2. -6 < l 5 - x l < 6

    -6 < 5 - x < 6

    -11 < -x < 1

    -1 < x < 11

    x = 11, -1

    Remember signs change when you divide/ multiply by a negative number.

  3. case 1: 5-x > 0

    |5-x| =5-x

    5-x=6

    -x=1

    x=-1

    case 2: 5-x < 0

    |5-x| = -(5-x) =-5+x

    -5+x = 6

    x=11

    x= 11 or -1

  4. ###If you wanna solve this absolute equation, then here you go:

    I 5-x I = 6

    So, 5-x=6 or 5-x=-6

    Therefore, x=-1 or 11

    ###If you wanna decide which one is greater, you have to discuss a little bit: here are three situations

    1. When I 5-x I  = 6, we have  x=-1 or 11

    2. When I 5-x I is greater than 6,

    we have   I5-x I >6, so  we have  5-x>6  or  5-x<-6

    Therefore, x<-1 or  x>11

    3. When 6 is greater than I 5-x I

    we have I 5-x I<6, than -6<5-x<6,

    Thus, -1<x<11

    So, when -1<x<11, 6 is greater than I5-x I

    when x<-1 or  x>11, I5-x I  is greater than 6

    when x=-1 or 11, I 5-x I = 6
