You can not overflow or dump out water!

  1. Pour 3 gallons from the eight into the three.  Then dump that 3 into the 5.  Fill the 3 from the 8 again and pour as much as you can (2 gallons) into the 5.  This leaves 1 gallon in the 3.  So empty the 5 into the 8, pour that 1 gallon into the 5, and fill the 3 from the 8 and pour that into the five.  Hope that makes sense!

  2. i dont think you can show work on that

    draw  a little picture

  3. hmm thats tough.

    i can produce 2 gallons:

pour 5 gallons into 5 gallon jug,

pour 3 gallons (from 5 gallon jug) into 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in 5 gallon jug.

    hope that helps!

  4. You take 5 gallons out from the 8 gallon jug using the 5 gallon jug.

Then, you have 3 gallons left in 8 gallon jug. Mark that spot.

Now, take the rest of the water(3 gallons) out of the jug using the 3 gallon jug.

Pour back the 5 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 8 gallon jug.

Mark that spot on the 8 gallon jug.

Pour the 5 gallons into the 5 gallon jug.

Mark the spot in between the 3 gallon and 5 gallon mark.

That should be exactly 4 gallons.

Then, you pour in three gallons into that jug.

Slowly pour the 5 gallon jug back into 8 gallon jug, but stop when you hit the 4 gallon mark.

you should now have 4 gallons in the 8 gallon jug and another 4 in the 5 gallon jug.

    =)

  5. In series:

    8 into 5

    5 into 3 (2 gal left in 5)

    3 into 8

    5 into 3 (2 gal in 3)

There are 6 gal left in 8 and 2 gal in 3

    8 into 5 (1 gal left in 8)

    5 into 3 (3 gal in 3 and 4 gal left in 5)

    3 into 8 (total of 4 gal)

There maybe a shorter way but this is my first glance.
